Mother's Day Makes for Exciting Times on the Race Course

In sharp contrast to the last two weekends, Sunday's winds were much calmer yet equally challenging as Mother Nature caused the winds to die at the finish line of the 2nd race and again at the start of the third race.  In the first race, Ty Affair (Danielle Kuper and Sissy Crowther with coach Stan Crockett) took 1st  and Cricket (Kinnet Ehring and Sarah Stanton with coach Chris Ehring) 2nd followed by Venturi (Stephanie Chaufournier and Rolly Butts with coach Mike Kennedy )  in 3rd place.

The exciting part occurred at the end of the 2nd race when Venturi crossed the finish line first but lost wind and tacked on port and fouled both Ty Affair and Cricket.  The US Sailing rule, as clarified by Judge Denvir, calls for the fouling boat to take a penalty.  As a result, 1st place in that race went to Ty Affair and 2nd to Cricket.   However, as the winds stalled at the start of the third race, Venturi came back for revenge stealing the only wind on the starting line and snuck through an opening on the starboard side of the course and managed to hold on to take 1st in the third race, followed by Cricket then Ty Affair.   Overall Ty Affair remains solidly in first place in the series.

The fleet was joined by coaches Ned Crockett sailing solo aboard Ladybug and Tom Watkins aboard Radio Flyer with Jane Wells as an on the water crew addition.    With their scores factored in, needless to say, the coaches did well with Radio Flyer winning 1st in the first two races and Ladybug grabbing 2nd place.

Many thanks to Lance Franke and Tom Armstrong on the Race Committee and Pete and Ginny Clay on board the Mark Boat.
