Typhoon Coaches

Since one of our missions is to improve our sailing/racing skills, we have a special opportunity available to our racing fleet.  The following experienced racers have generously offered their time as “onboard” Typhoon Coaches for our Sunday racing series:

·         Chuck Carmichael
·         Gary Hooper
·         Mike Kennedy
·         Ned Crocket
·         Ron Mihills
·         Tom Watkins

It’s entirely up to each captain as to whether or not you want to tap a coach.  But if you do here are the guidelines to ensure a level playing field:

·         The coach is on aboard to provide guidance/pointers but not to take the helm nor serve as a third crew member;
·         A boat can have a coach aboard any or all races, but each coach can be on a particular boat only once (so if a captain wants a coach on all 5 races, then she would have to tap 5 different coaches);  and
·         It will be up to each captain to take the initiative to contact the coach and work out the logistics.  Please note that coaches’ availability varies and is subject to change.

For those who might be a tad apprehensive about racing, having a coach on board should allay any concerns.  So take advantage of this opportunity and get tips on how to time the start,  when to set the whisker pole and/or any other skills you’re keen to improve.  Who knows…you might even ask one of the coaches to check out your rigging before the racing season gets underway.

As an additional learning opportunity, Arabella Denvir and Jerry Latell will be organizing a “basics” course on Racing Rules currently slated for Friday evening April 25th.  If enough of you choose to attend this seminar, then we can piggyback and hold a brief captain/crew meeting afterwards to answer any questions you might have before our first race on 4/27.  Stay tuned for more details on the rules seminar.  In the meantime, feel free to start reaching out to the coaches as no doubt their time will fill up quickly!
